Living Up a Simple (and Thankful) Life

It has been quite a refreshing three days off work this Memorial Day weekend.  We are just loving not feeling the pressures we have felt all year.  In one word, we are thankful.

On Saturday, Caleb woke up at 4am to go turkey hunting with Jonah.  He had a blast being out in nature with his buddy.  All week he had been practicing his turkey call, haha, but unfortunately the guys didn't see anything out on their wilderness adventure this time.   But they sure had fun dressing themselves up in camo! lol!

When he was out and about, I found this picture of him, taken almost ten years ago.  He and his dad would go out and shoot their own turkey at the ranch (where he grew up) on Thanksgiving morning.

Another SUPER exciting thing is that this weekend marked 3 months since Caleb has been discharged from the hospital.  Considering the fact that he was unable to even stand at that time, we were so thrilled when we were able to go for a 2 &1/2 mile walk this weekend!  And it wasn't too slow either.  Caleb has come so far in a short amount of time.  It makes us think that all this work to get him better is beyond worth it.  God has really been with us, healing my husband, and we could not be more thankful!!!  This means that Caleb should be ready to travel and go to my sister's wedding in Iowa soon!!!

On a side note, I have been wanting to incorporate ginger into our menu for Caleb, considering how anti-inflammatory it is.  And I found a recipe online that I thought would be great! So I made our own homemade Sugar Free Ginger Ale!  It is actually pretty good.

So, as long as Caleb doesn't react to the ginger (that was our food we added today), we will keep this on our summer menu!  We also may try to add our fresh mint that we have been growing next time.  Yummm.... And its all healthy and beneficial and yummy!

This weekend has been a good weekend.  We are blessed.  And we are, oh, so thankful! :)

Coconut Crusted Chicken

What did we have for dinner tonight at the Barnes'?  Coconut crusted chicken nuggets.  And it was, oh, so good!  For the last month, we have been adding one food in a day to Caleb's diet, as we try to figure out if he is intolerant to anything.  And today's food that we added: Coconut.  Yummm!

All I did was cut 3/4 lb chicken breast into small pieces.  On the side, I mixed unsweetened coconut (about 3/4 cup-ish) and sea salt (1/2 Tbsp-ish) and black pepper (1/2 Tbsp-ish).  After tossing the chicken pieces into the coconut mixture (making sure it was coated liberally),  I baked it at 350 degrees for like 40 minutes (the coconut was browning on the top).  It was so great...Caleb loved it, even saying it was better than non-healthy chicken nuggets!  I think it would be good with some garlic salt instead of regular, but we haven't added that into his diet yet.

This one will definitely be made at our house again....as long as Caleb has no side effects from coconut! :)

Self-protection Injuries

I was talking to my friend Crystal the other day.  I just love that girl.  She was my roommate for a time when I was single. And over the years I have come to truly appreciate her transparency in life.  She is the real thing.  Anyhow, while we were roommates she started to get some foot pain in the ball of her foot.  Well, as the years continued, it only got worse.  I remember a few years ago, it was the second time I ever hung out with Caleb, and I invited Crystal to come on a hike with some of us to see what she thought of this guy I thought was cool, to get her approval.  I just remember her having a lot of pain, even walking, on this hike.  The next year she would be seeing specialists and doctors who gave her no real help.  Some would tell her that she needed to go somewhere else cause they didn’t know what was causing it or how to help.  That is, until not too long ago.

She works for a nearby church, and one of the ladies there kept telling her she needed to see this man who has been able to help a lot of people with various conditions.  He is like a chiropractor, reflexologist, or massage therapist or something,.  Anyhow, when he took a look at her foot, he said, “I think this has nothing to do with your foot.  I think it actually is from a whip last, neck injury.  Were you ever in a car accident?”  She said, “Well, I mean I was in an accident when I was 16, but I healed up and it didn’t bother me after that.”  And continued asking her, “I bet you have a lot of sinus problems, and maybe you wake up with your hands numb.”  She was amazed cause she never thought to mention her hand issue to people before.  He says to her, “You actually never really healed completely, in fact, you have probably been in pain all this time not even realizing it because your body and its muscles will do things to subconsciously protect the painful areas so you won’t feel pain there, but you have been creating a totally different pain and issue in your foot.  These self-protective mechanisms in your body are actually creating more a problem for you.  Although your body thinks it is good.  These self-protective mechanisms are doing you harm.”  She kind of didn’t know what to think of all it.  But  then she told me she was kind of weirded out when he told her, “I can see the areas of pain on your body because there are different signs I see.  Like here….” And he presses on this spot near her shoulder and she told me, “Julie, it was the most awful pain ever.”  And he pressed on another spot on her back, same thing.

So he works on those spots, and after she tells him, “I actually feel like I am able to stand a little better.”  He said, “Yeah, your are standing on your bones and not your muscles for the first time in many years.”  So she gets in her car and starts to drive home, when she realizes that as she comes up to a four way stop, and another car jets out, she realizes her body reacted way more extremely then it should.  She said she realized she was subconsciously contracting all her muscles to protect herself in case something happened, and tensing up all her muscles.  And she realized all these years she was subconsciously doing this, to protect her pain, but in the meantime she was creating a more debilitating and painful problem for herself.

I just think this is such a good analogy of life!  Many of us have experience pain at some point of time in our lives…all different types.  And as a result, we try to heal up form it and move on.  But as we continue in life, and actually know what pain feels like, we subconsciously have our own self-protective mechanisms to protect ourselves from ever feeling pain again….and by doing so, we create a whole other set of issues and problems.

I know for me, I fear losing those I love most.  And as of more recently, I fear something happening to me and all that would mean for my husband.  And I continue to fear unfulfilled dreams.

So, after losing many people in my life, sometimes I can try to take “control” (how in the world do I try to convince myself I am in control, hahahah, but I do….) and if something happens that makes me feel out of control, my tendency is to tense up.  And I get self-protective. I go over all situations in my head of all that could happen, and what I would do if they did happen.  And in reality, most of the time, everything works out just fine.  So my self-protection is to put up walls and also to worry and strips me from joy.

Maybe I haven’t fully healed….

Maybe the pain of many years has caused a worse problem of worrying, and not living life in the moment….

Maybe this pain has prevented me from truly living free and dreaming big about my future….

But here is the deal.  I can’t just make it better.  I know very well, we can’t strive to heal.  In fact, striving slows down the healing process.  We need to stop, and let God heal us.  We need to abide in Christ (to sit in His presence, let Him talk to us, listen to Him, talk to Him, obey Him, and enjoy Him) and He can touch those areas in our life that are broken and hurting.  He can speak truth to us as we read the Bible about all Who He is and all He wants of our lives.  God can really heal us!

Somehow when I just spend regular time with Him, life just seems less complicated.  And life just seems less scary.  And I remember.  And I hope.  And I trust.  And I heal.  And some healing may take some time.

Sometimes it may not feel good to let Him to work out the painful areas in my life, much like the man who worked on Crystals painful spots, but in the end it is for our good.  It is only as He works on us, and heals us, and we soak up His love, that we can start living the healthy life, the hopeful life, the free life, that He wants of us.

Oh, I am beginning to think life is just one big lesson.  Each year that goes by I feel like I am just starting to "get it"....but I think that is how all of life will be, as long as I am here. And that is okay, because oh am I glad that God is patient with me....

Real Life Fairytale

Yesterday, we were driving home from church and a song came on the radio.  Caleb and I were holding hands (we never don't hold hands in the car) and we listened to it.  It was such a sweet song!  It said, "You know I'd fall apart without you, I don't know how you do what you do.  Cause everything that don't make sense about me, makes sense when I'm with you...I want to make you feel wanted.  I wanna call you mine, wanna hold your hand forever, and never let you forget it. I wanna make you feel wanted...As good as you make me feel, I want to make you feel better.  Better than your fairy tales, better than your best dreams, Your more than everything I need, You're all I ever wanted."

Then Caleb looked over at me and asked, "Do I make you feel wanted?"  I responded, "Of course you do!" And then he said the sweetest thing..."You are my best friend in the world.  I love you more than anybody other than Jesus."  I said, "I love you more than anybody than Jesus, too."  And he smiled, holding my hand, and said, "How cool is that?!  There really isn't much more we could want then."

So true.

I always dreamed of what my marriage would look like.  You know, Caleb and I have had our struggles, every couple does.  Ours has just come early on in our marriage.  But I know I am loved and I know I am wanted, totally and completely.  And I know that Caleb is keeping his promise that he made to me the day we got engaged when he told me that I would always have the number two spot in his life...second only to God.  That is the love that is beautiful....to feel safe and secure, in a love that is motivated by God's love as your center.  It's the safest, deepest kind of love, even when circumstances are difficult.  So, yes, this type of love surpasses what I thought existed in my imagination....its my real life fairy tale.

Mother's Day at the Barnes'

Hahahahaha.....
Well, this morning being Mother's Day, I woke up and came out to the kitchen to find this from my sweet husband....a trophy (lol!) :), coffee, and biscotti...

If you look closely, on the trophy, you will see this...it says, "World's Best Wife 2011-2012 Julie Barnes" :) lol!

Then, after church we went to the farmer's market and bought some organic red romaine lettuce, strawberries, rosemary, and mint.  And then went and got all the pots and soil to make for a little garden.  This is a good start considering the fact that I always joke (but am mainly serious) about how much of a black thumb I have...I seem to kill EVERYTHING I touch.  So, I am hopeful this year.  And if it looks like they start growing, we may go get stuff for a salsa garden in a week or two. But, this is a good start.  We had so much fun planting it together.

So although this is in honor of Mother's Day, this is not an announcement that I am going to be a mom cause that is not the case for now.  But being Mother's Day, Caleb wanted to celebrate me being the future mom of his kids and my role in his life.  :)  Oh, I love him.....

Balsamic Peppered Strawberries

I could not be more thrilled that Spring is here...for many reason...one being fresh produce! What's even better is the farmer's market is just blocks away from my work. So, I will easily be a frequent shopper this year.

Well, today I got some fabulous organic strawberries (strawberries are one of the main foods that you should get organic...they are incredibly porous and will soak up all the icky pesticides) and tried out a new treat.  Strawberries with balsamic vinegar, quite a bit of pepper, and a little organic sugar.  I am so pleased with the end product!  Next time, I MAY use a little oil with the vinegar next time so that it isn't quite so strong (either that or not use as much vinegar).  But I was trying to cut back on the fat so left it out this time.  Safflower oil would work nicely with the flavor...or any other light tasting oil.  And it tasted better after a half hour chilled in the fridge so that the flavors blended.  Yummmmm.... :)

Caleb: His Self-Titled Album

When Caleb was little, he had a very abnormally high voice.  It really bothered him.  So he prayed.  And he asked God to please give him a deeper voice.  He told God that if He gave him a deeper voice that he would sing out at church.  Well, his voice deepened.  And anybody who has been at church can testify that Caleb took that vow (as all his vows) very seriously, and that my husband still sings out at church to this day.  It brings a smile to my face as I hear him worship God with his country twang.

Well, tonight I sit here after dinner listening to Caleb playing his guitar and singing....so begins a new chapter of his musical "career."  Apparently, he and a couple guys from his work have decided to create their own band.  Haha...they even held their first band meeting at lunchtime today at 1:30!  LOL!  So, they are all at home practicing tonight.  Hence, I am getting my own live concert tonight. :)

Pretty much...I am thankful our home is full is singing and laughter tonight.  Life is good.

These Boots Were Made For Walkin'...

Guess what?!  I got to go for a couple little walks with my husband this week!  It is amazing to just hold hands and stroll.  We couldn't even try to be in a hurry.  But to be able to enjoy what we used to take for granted, well, it makes me beyond thankful.  I don't want to go back to the always-on-the-go lifestyle....

And then this weekend Caleb left to go to Central Oregon with the guys from church to go fishing.  He had a great time.  This is a huge accomplishment in that he was able to get away and do "man stuff."  Plus he had to walk quite a bit from the lodge to the river and also did stairs for the first time in over seven months.  It was a good time for his mind, body, and spirit.

While he was away, other than work, I prepared my thoughts and heart to speak to the women at Hillside this morning.  I shared a little about my story and addressed the topic of God's goodness in our lives, even when life doesn't go as we had hoped for or planned.

But, since this was the first time Caleb and I spent the night apart since we have been married (we went two years without it!), it was kinda hard! I missed him so much! I mean, sure, we talked a couple times a day, but I could not sleep.  So...funny story....I was kinda going in and out of sleep Friday night.  And I knew my friend had just got home from a blind date, so finally at midnight I figured, "Forget sleeping..." and got up, called my friend, got cereal for myself and we did some online investigation of the guy she had just met! haha! It brought me back to my single days!  But lets just say I am thankful and happy to have him home safe and sound...and think I will get a great nights sleep tonight since I will be so exhausted! haha!

And lastly....this is huge!....Caleb is feeling so good, even after a weekend of activity, he started his comeback workout tonight!  He is planning on coming back reeeealllly sllllooooow and not pushing himself at all.  In fact, just like last year, he literally has to start with my 10 lb weights and go up by no more than 5 lbs a week.  But last year when he did this, in a few months he was throwing up over 100 lbs dumbbells each arm and had 17 inch arms! (He is my very own Rambo!) :) This year, he isn't going to get as big.  He knows he needs to stay light for his joints.  He is one of those rare people who literally enjoys working out.  I wish I had that trait. :)

Pretty much, life has calmed down at the Barnes'.  Awe............  For tonight, we are together again, healthy, and thankful people... :)
